Sonnenborgh is historically an important site:
- It was built in 1552 on the orders of Emperor Charles V to defend the city of Utrecht against a new weapon: the movable cannon.
- The first Hortus Botanicus of Utrecht University was established here in 1639.
- In 1854, scientist Christoforus Buys Ballot founded an astronomical and meteorological institute (KNMI) at Sonnenborgh.
